The Potter Pensieve #15 – PoA Chapters 19-22

Sunday, February 20th, 2011 | Author: Adam

We’re back and concluding our look at Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban! This week we discuss topics such as: Snape’s childish revenge, Why a stag patronus?, Lupin’s confusing transformation, multiple Dumbledores, our least favorite movie endings, and tons more! We’d also like to welcome Kirsten, runner-up of the New Year’s challenge, to the show!

A Note on Sound Quality: This week we tried something new. We individually recorded our parts, and then we combined them into one recording. The problem that we faced was that our microphones picked up the sounds from our headphones. So, consequently, you will hear a bit of extra noise in the background. But this is not enough to cause distraction. We’re very sorry for the inconvenience, so enjoy episode 15, and our conclusion of book 3!

A Dementor Cure

Tuesday, November 02nd, 2010 | Author: Kim

Depression is something expressed in a variety of different ways.  For the Beatles, it was expressed through song.  Their famous hit, “Help”, details a story of one person’s depression.  One person’s crying out, “Help me if you can.  I’m feeling down.”  For others, it is expressed through art.  For Pablo Picasso, a blue period which produced some of the most beautiful art in the world helped to ease the pain and sadness of depression.

For J.K. Rowling, depression was channeled into words and thus, the dementor was born.  Depression has never before been captured in such an honest and serious way.  A creature that takes over your life, sucks out any joy or hope or happiness you might have.  A creature that makes you feel as though there is no escaping dread and fear and sorrow.  That is depression to a T.  It is an ugly creature, sucking the life force from people.

For Rowling, there is only one cure… Chocolate.  For others, it is song.  For others still, art.  For me?  My puppy.  My family.  Jumping on a trampoline.  Watching horror movies.  J.K. is a brilliant woman to equate happiness with chocolate.  Chocolate is something that makes everyone feel warm, fuzzy and happy inside.  But for me, I can achieve the same affect by rubbing my face on my soft puppy’s fur.  Or by jumping sky high on a trampoline, forgetting that dread and sorrow even exist.

What’s your own personal dementor cure?

A Magical Creatures Lesson!

Saturday, October 02nd, 2010 | Author: Kim
There are dozens upon dozens of magical creatures in the Harry Potter world.  Thestrals. Mandrakes. Hippogriffs. Blast-Ended Skrewts.
While some of these creatures are more dangerous than others, each serves their place in the wizarding world. Even mandrakes, whose qualities are little less than incredibly annoying, have their place.
So here is my question to you: Which magical creature is the coolest?
Is it the thestral, with their invisibility to some and their leathery skin? Or is it the hippogriff, who demands respect? What about those pesky mandrakes, who can make people faint with one tiny screech? They sure did come in handy when Hermione was petrified.  And they sure did come in handy when used as a weapon of sorts against Death Eaters in the Deathly Hallows.
Now you weigh in.  Out of all the magical creatures in the Harry Potter world, which is the most awesome?
